Summary of my Current Professional Responsibilities Experience:
The Samastha project funded by USAID and implemented by Karnataka Health Promotion Trust since October 2006 aims to develop a comprehensive program that provides HIV and AIDS prevention, care, support and treatment to vulnerable and affected populations in 12 high prevalence districts of Karnataka State and four coastal districts in the State of Andhra Pradesh. The project includes 4 main components:
Component 1 – HIV prevention among high-risk groups in rural areas of Karnataka.Component 2 -HIV prevention for vulnerable populations in rural areas of Karnataka.Component 3 -Community-based care, support and treatment in Karnataka and AndhraPradesh.Component 4 -Capacity building and systems strengthening in Karnataka.
Project Partners
Implementing this project is a complementary partnership of organizations that together bring strong technical, managerial and implementation capabilities and demonstrated past performance. The University of Manitoba is the prime applicant and responsible for overall technical design, management and administration. Two organizations with broad international experience and India-based experience provide key technical support and support for capacity building: EngenderHealth in the area of HIV care, support and treatment and Population Services International (PSI) for developing effective communications strategies for behaviour change and mobilization to services. The Karnataka Health Promotion Trust (KHPT) is responsible for overall coordination, management, contracting and monitoring and evaluation of programs and services. For field level implementation, KHPT also works with a group of NGOs.
The Basic Training Package: is designed for all cadres of staff and is the foundation stone of the entire training process. It addresses the basic issues of Acute, Chronic and Palliative care. The design and content of this package is the result of a detailed and comprehensive process whereby my responsibility was to:
- Define (in consultation with a group of experts) the ‘core competencies’ that the health care providers needed to deliver ‘Comprehensive care of PLHIV.’
- Carry out a ‘training needs assessment’ of the target group.
- Design a draft module.
- Convene a meeting of experts to see if the draft module addresses the core competencies identified, and make the necessary amendments.
- Arrange for translation to the local language and translation back to English to ensure consistency.
- Field test the module, with a group of experts as evaluators.
- Incorporate the changes based on the experts’ feedback.
- Finalise the modules.
