The Country History
Christopher Columbus was the first European to reach the land. In 1498, he discovered Venezuela in his expedition to South American countries. First permanent European settlers were established in Venezuela. Venezuela became colony of Spain in sixteenth century. Spain exploited Venezuela for 200 years. It infused modern European civilisation in Venezuela as before arrival of Europeans, indigenous people of Venezuela were mere agriculturist and hunters.
Although Europeans brought modernization and civilization, yet people were undergoing through deep resentment and dissatisfaction living in Spanish colony. They initiated freedom struggle against Spanish imperialism. Simon Bolivar pioneered the struggle and today he is remembered by people with great pride and brave son of the country. On 18 December, Venezuela became independent from Spanish imperialism.
In 1998, famous communist leader Hugo Shaves was elected president. He has been opposing the capitalistic and imperialistic policies of United State of America. He often holds clashes with American. He restructured the constitution in 1999. Venezuela has been politically instable country. The country has seen several unsuccessful uprising including period of authoritarianism and period of dictatorship during first half of 19th century.
