Also known as the Holy See (State of the Vatican City) - Santa Sede (Stato della Citta del Vaticano), the smallest state of the world is the Vatican State . With a population of 800 people it is also known as smallest independent state in the world in terms of population and size. It occupies an area of 44 hectares. It was founded following the signing of the Lateran Pacts between the Holy See and Italy on February 11th 1929 and were ratified on June 7th 1929. Its nature as a sovereign State is distinct from the Holy See and has been recognized internationally.
