One of the smallest countries in South America, Uruguay is also one of the most prosperous and harmonius. More than 40 percent of its people , about 1,449,900 , live in montevideo, the capital, chief port , and largest city.Uruguay has a total area of 176,220 sq.km with total population of 3,400,000.Spanish is the main language spoken with christainity as the main religion practised and uruguayan peso is the currency used.
 
HISTORY
 
Before European colonization ,the inhabitants of Uruguay were various tribes of hunter gatherer native Americans.Uruguay became a zone of contention between the spanish and the Portuguese empires. In 1603 , the spanish began to introduce cattle , which became the main source of income in the region. The first permanent settlement in present Uruguay was founded by spanish in 1964.
 
POLITICS
 
In Uruguay politics , the President of Uruguay is both head of state and head of governement in a multi party system. Executive branch is exercised by the government .Legislative branch is vested in both the government and the two chambers of the General Assembley of Uruguay. The Judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature.
 
CLIMATE
 
The climate in uruguay is temperate. it has warm summers and cold winters. The coolest month is June , while the warmest is January. The rainfall is equally distributed throughout the year. There can be frequent thunderstorms in summer.Snow is not common in uruguay.
 
ECONOMY
 
There are 11 times as many sheep, cattle, and horses as people in uruguay.Three quarters of uruguay is rich green Pushtore that provides excellent grazing land for its 25,000,000 sheep and 10,000,000 cattle.The land provides work for nearly half the population. Uruguay is the world's second biggest producer of wool, and textiles made from wool account for about 20 percent of uruguayan exports.

More than 90 percent of uruguay's power is generated through hydroelectricity.The main hydroeclectric plants are situated on the country's major rivers , the Uruguay and its tributary , the Rio Negro , which both widen out into the Rio de la Plata estuary. huge turbines have been built across the rivers , so that as the water rushes through , it turns the turbines and makes electricity.
 
PEOPLE
 
Most uruguayans are of Spanish or Italian descent.They enjoy considerable prosperity, largely due to the wealth from earlier cattle ranching in the country. The country has an impressive legacy of its artistic and literary traditions .Cities have a rich architectural heritage and an impressive number of writers , artists , and musicians.Uruguayan tango is the form of dance that can be seen in Montevideo.
