The history
Spain's history was shaped by many forces. Celts, Romans, Phoenicians, Carthaginians and Germanic tribes all had a part in influencing the people of Spain. Until mid 1900’s Spain was one of the most underdeveloped countries of Western Europe. It remained neutral in World Wars I and II but suffered through a devastating civil war (1936-39). A number of years of unrest followed the civil war, however during 1960’s rapid economic development changed Spain into an industrial nation. After the death of General Franco in November 1975, Spain made a rapid transformation from dictatorship to democracy. It joined the EU in 1986.
