Formerly a part of Yugoslavia, and then later Union of Serbia and Montenegro, Serbia finally became an independent nation in 2006. It is beginning to re-emerge as a tourist destination and is fast becoming one of Europe's hottest 'undiscovered' spots.
Contained in the landscape of this verdant country are alpine meadows, impenetrable forests, glittering limestone caves, remote monasteries, mountain lakes, hot springs and fields of wild herbs. It has a magnificent Djerdap National Park, stretching along the right bank of the Danube River. The Djerdap Gorge is one of Europe's most spectacular geographic features.
