Often overshadowed by its much larger eastern neighbor Spain, Portugal is known as an unspoilt tourism jewel on the European map. Portugal's rich and turbulent history shaped the country, from the 15th- and 16th-century days of discovery, to the autocratic leadership of Estado Novo from 1932 to 1974.
The delight of Portugal is that, although it is undeniably part of modern Europe, it retains some rural enclaves where time has stood still and traditions flourish. Some of its best elements are ruggedwindswept coastline, pristine beaches, cobbled streets, fairytale castles, wonderful cuisine, lively entertainment, charming handcrafts, thrilling nightlife, country fairs, excellent sporting facilities and warm, friendly people.
