Poland lies in the central part of the European continent and covers a total surface area of 322,500 sq km. With the Baltic Sea to the north, Poland shares its borders with Germany on the west, Ukraine and Belarus on the east, Czech Republic and Slovakia in the south, Lithuania, and Russia in the north. Poland also borders the Baltic Sea in the northern side. Warsaw is the capital city.
Poland is mostly low-lying with some mountainous regions. 91.3 percent of its territory lies below 300 m above sea level. The highest point is Mt Rysy in the Tatras (2499 m).
Most of the country is a plain with no natural boundaries except the Carpathian Mountains in the south and the Oder and Neisse rivers in the west. Other major rivers, which are important to commerce, are the Vistula, Warta, and Bug.
