The Country History

Maori are considered to be the most indigenous people inhabited in New Zealand some 800 years ago. They are believed to have migrated from Hawaii Island crossing over Pacific Ocean and settled in New Zealand.

Dutch were the first Europeans to have arrived on this Island in 1642. Dutch voyager Abel Jonson Tasman was on his expedition to explore South Pacific nations.  During which he sighted New Zealand. Unfortunately, his discovery did not prove successful as all the members of his crew were killed by native Maori including Abel Tasman himself.

British explorer James Cook took possession on this Island in 1769. He reached New Zealand in 1769 and prepared full map of the country elaborating almost all coastlines. New Zealand was colonized by British government till Treaty of Waitangi was done, which was the turning point in the history of New Zealand.  British government negotiated a treaty with Maori known as Treaty of Waitangi signed on 6th February 1840, which is regarded as New Zealand’s foundation as a nation.  In fact, Treaty of Waitangi is the declaration of independence.

In the late 18th century, after Captain Cook’s exploration to this Island, a large number of Europeans settled in New Zealand. The European expatriates in New Zealand are known as Parekh. Around 2,000 Parekh were settled New Zealand in 1839. Parekh started buying land in New Zealand and looking for trade with French.  They started exporting agriculture product, timber and artifacts.

Following treaty of Waitangi, first parliamentary procedure was conducted in 1854. During World War II, Maori had begun to move to cities in search of job and allured by urban way of comfortable living leaving behind rural life. New Zealand supported Britain during World War II. Soon after independence, economy integrated itself with world economy. However, it had to suffer as others did in the Great Depression if the 1930s. in view of such crisis, government elected after this incident had to imply corrective measure and thus established comprehensive welfare and protectionist economy.
