Economy
Agriculture is the backbone of the country’s economic structure. New Zealand is the third largest producer and third exporter of wool. It produces almost 50% of the world’s lamb and mutton export. Most interesting feature is that in New Zealand sheep outnumbers people by more than fifteen to one.
There are more then 8 million cattle and the country is world’s largest and most efficient exporter of dairy product. New Zealand is a major exporter of fresh fruit, beef & fish. The government is funding research to make farming more efficient and adoptable to world market trend. The strategy is to grow, make and market anything that climate will support and world market will buy. Thus, the emphasis is on marketing food for specialized market rather than on bulk exporting. |
