The Country history
The Netherlands was able to stay neutral through World War I but couldn't exercise the same privilege in World War II. The German troops invaded it in May 1940. The nation was liberated in May 1945. In 1949, after a four-year war, the Netherlands granted independence to the netherland East Indies, which became the Republic of Indonesia.
The Netherlands also joined NATO that year. It joined the European Economic Community (later, the EU) in 1958. In 1999, it adopted the single European currency, the euro.Along with Belgium and Luxembourg, the Netherlands is also one of three member nations of the BENELUX economic union. Stable and successful, the Netherlands continues to play a key role in European affairs. |
