Government
Parliament is bicameral divided into Chamber of Deputies and Senate. Total number of members in Chamber of Deputies is 500 and that of in Senate is 128. Among 500 members of Chamber of Deputies, 300 members are elected on general basis. However, rests of 200 is elected on the basis of complex formula based on the percentage of vote cast for each party candidate.
Like most of the country government of Mexico is distributed into three branches. The three branches are legislative, executive and Judiciary. President is elected for six years by direct popular vote. Once elected, a candidate cannot reelect.
Executive branch is headed by president and he is the chief policy maker. He has tremendous power and presides over the cabinet meetings. Cabinet is the most crucial and basic component of executive branch. Chamber of Deputies and Senate combine to form legislative body of Government. Unlike president, member of both houses can be reelected, but not in consecutive term.
Role of judiciary in Mexico is limited with confined power of not to intervene in the policy making process of Executive and legislative. Supreme Court is the apex court. Chief justice of Supreme Court is appointed by president on the recommendation of two third of Senate members. In recent past, certain initiatives have been taken to fortify the Supreme Court as now Supreme Court has come up with the power to review newly passed legislation, if demanded by two third of Senate members. |
