Japan is an East Asian island located in the Pacific Ocean and lies to the east of China, Korea and Russia. It comprises over several thousands of island, chief among them being Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu, accounting for 97% of the land area. Almost all islands are volcanic in origin.
