Geography
Hungary is located in Central Europe, northwest of Romania. Its capital is Budapest. Other important cities include Debrecen, Gyor, Miskolc, Pecs, and Szeged.
Although Hungary isn’t a huge country geographically speaking, it incorporates a diverse array of landscapes within its borders. The mountainous and hilly areas are found in the north of the country as well as in Transdubia, which is located in the west of Hungary. Transdanubia also has flat open ranges apart from small mountains and numerous hills. A great proportion of the geographical land mass is taken up by the Great Plains located in central and eastern Hungary. Bordered by mountains on all sides, it has a variety of terrains, including regions of fertile soil, sandy areas, wastelands, and swampy areas.
Hungary is blessed with several rivers of considerable size, the largest of which is the River Danube that runs through the country from north to south. Other significant rivers are Tisza, Raba and Drava. It also has a vast number of lakes dotted around the country, the largest of which is Lake Balaton located in the center west of Hungary. |
