Geography
Covering an area of 356,959 square kilometers, Germany is located in Central Europe, between the Netherlands and Poland, bordering the Baltic Sea and the North Sea. Its capital city is Berlin, and other important cities are Hamburg, Munich, Frankfurt, Cologne and Stuttgart.
Germany has five distinct geographical areas and widely varying landscapes. From north to south these are the flat north German lowlands, the hills and the low mountains of the Mittelgebirge, the west and south German plateaus and mountains (including the Black Forest, the Schwarzwald), and the south German Alpine foothills. The Alps is the highest mountain range in Europe. The highest mountain peak in Germany is the Zugspitze Mountains.
The most important rivers are the Rhine, the Weser, the Elbe, the Main, the Oder, and the Danube. |
