Geography
Croatia is located in the southeastern part of Europe covering a land area of 56,691 square kilometres. It shares its land borders with Hungary and Slovenia in the north, Herzegovnia and Bosnia in the South, and Serbia in the east. It shares a long coastline with Italy in the Adriatic Sea. It stretches in the form of an arc from the Danube in the northeast to Istria in the west and Boka Kotorska in the southeast.
The capital of Croatia is the city of Zagreb, a very old and beautiful city, and a leading industrial, cultural and scientific center. Major seaports of Croatia are Dubrovnik, Ploce, Pula, Rijeka, Sibenik, Split and Zadar.
The Croatian landscape includes mountains and highlands, areas of karst (limestone), plains, rugged coastline and islands. There are 1,185 islands in the Adriatic, but only 66 are populated.
The main rivers are the Sava, Drava and Danube. Other rivers are the Mirna, the Rasa, the Zrmanja, the Krka and the Cetina. |
