The continent became inhibited around 4,000 thousands years ago by indigenous Australians or aborigines. Australia became known to another world when Dutch, Portuguese, and Spanish voyage discovered it in the 17th century. The British arrived to Australia in 1688. In 1770, they claimed the possession on the island. First British colony was set up in Port Jackson in 1788, which is now known as Sydney. Till the suspension of British rule about 161,000 of British convicts were transported and settled here. In the recent decades, Australia has transformed into advanced competitive market economy.
People settled from Europe to Australia during British rule transformed six colonies into six states. These six colonies were constituted and established by British in the following order: New South Wales, 1788; Tasmania, 1825; Western Australia, 1830; South Australia, 1836; Victoria, 1851 and Queensland, 1859. Later on, in 1901 these six states came to join each other as a member state of Commonwealth of Australia. Three major parties in Australia are Australian Labour party, the liberal party and the National party. In March 1996, coalition government of Liberal Party and National Party came into the power ruling out Labour Party after 13 years in power.
As western part was largely grassland, grains and sheep farming grew there into important economic enterprises. Australia utilized and exploited its natural resources to its maximum for agriculture and manufacturing that benefited Great Britain in World War I &II. Mining of minerals attracted settlers due to abundance of gold rushes found in it. Due to liberal immigration law, Australia is flooded with a large number of expatriate particularly from Asian Continent diversifying a population that was predominantly of English and Irish.
