Geography
Situated on the eastern shore of the Adriatic Sea, Albania borders Montenegro and Serbia to the north, Macedonia to the east, and Greece to the south. Its capital city is Tirana.
Albania is composed of two major regions: a mountainous highland region in the north, east and south that constitutes 70% of the land area, and a western coastal lowland region that contains nearly all of the country's agricultural land.
The Albanian Alps in the northern part of the country, with elevations approaching 8,900 feet, is the most rugged part of the country. It is heavily forested and sparsely populated. In contrast to the Alps, the central mountain region is more densely populated and has a generally less rugged terrain.
The Drini is the main river and Lake Shkoda is the largest lake. Lake Ohrid, shared with Macedonia, is one of Europe's deepest lakes. |
